Vascular Access Lab Assistant Nurse Manager (NURSE SVC SUPV 2)

Job Summary

Registered Nurses in the Heart and Vascular Center department at UC Davis Medical Center provide care to adults with a variety of medical surgical needs. Patient conditions include: but not limited to, pre/post procedural interventional nephrology, cardiology, and pulmonary patients.The Heart and Vascular Center AN II provides daily supervision of all personnel and operational activities related to invasive procedural labs and/or pre & post procedural unit(s). Responsibilities include patient care management, personnel resource management, and unit based supply and equipment management. Additionally, this position is responsible for development and maintenance of staff competencies, policies, procedures, and performance improvement projects. Provides direct patient care within the scope of their license and training. Applies experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.Assistant Nurse Managers are registered nurses who are responsible for the operation of the nursing unit over a specific time.period. The Assistant Nurse Manager must have a strong foundation of clinical knowledge and skills on which to base judgments and make decisions, organizing abilities to direct nursing tasks and operations, and interpersonal skills to facilitate communication and the work of others. The Assistant Nurse Manager accepts the responsibility for, and is accountable for, his/her own nursing practice. The Assistant Nurse Manager also seeks out and pursues opportunities for learning and assumes responsibility for their own self-development. Registered nurses must be knowledgeable and skillful in performing the Assistant Nurse Manager role. A registered nurse who assumes the role of Assistant Nurse Manager also assumes the responsibility inherent to the role. Three fundamental responsibilities for Assistant Nurse Manager include planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit nursing activities.

In addition, the Assistant Nurse Manager identifies and implements nursing interventions and evaluates results for a wide variety of patient populations, directs and acts as resource to other members of the nursing team as assigned and promotes compliance and support for policies. The primary responsibilities for this position consist of providing total, comprehensive, continuous and patient centered care which includes: assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties; and adhering to University policies and procedures as well as federal, state and local regulations.

Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice a Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • ACLS
  • Registered Nurse in the State of California without restriction
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UCDH issued CPR
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing
  • Minimum of 3 years recent experience in invasive Cardiovascular Services.
  • At least 3 years of recent RN experience in a procedural/Pre/Post care.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
  • Ability to utilize medical terminology appropriately
  • Knowledge of current trends in nursing
  • Commitment to excellence in patient care
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Adapts to change in a positive, professional and productive manner
  • Knowledge of legal implications in clinical practice and documentation
  • Knowledge of performance improvement and evidence-based practice
  • Must be able to wear radiation protection apparel weighing up to 25 lbs. for extended periods.
  • Ability to work flexible hours/weekends/holidays as needed.
  • Advanced knowledge of invasive procedural labs
  • Skills to work accurately and quickly under pressure.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to work in an independent clinical leadership capacity, with ability to appropriately set priorities.
  • Ability to be adaptable, flexible, excel with change, and comfortable in a dynamic environment.

Department Overview


The Vascular Access Lab provides care to the Interventional Nephrology many of whom are on dialysis. They perform procedures that include: Endovascular Procedures such as Arteriograms, Fistulograms, AV fistula/Graft Angioplasty, AV fistula/Graft Declot. Venous Access such as Temporary Catheter Placements, Catheter Revisions, Port Placement/Revision/Removal. The unit also supports Oncology patients by performing bone marrow biopsies under conscious sedation. Cares for pre- and post op patients for the Cardiac Cath / EP labs.
