Position Summary

The Lower School Principal oversees all aspects of the Lower School, which includes approximately 300 students in grades 1-5 from across the Salt Lake Valley, Park City, and the surrounding communities. Rowland Hall's Lower School is a vibrant community where young learners thrive. Small class sizes allow teachers to foster personalized relationships with each student, nurturing their individual strengths and passions. From hands-on science experiments to coding challenges and creative art projects, students are immersed in a diverse and engaging curriculum. The school provides a stimulating learning environment for young learners, including an innovative TREC (technology, robotics, engineering, and coding) Lab, field studies, and opportunities for meaningful community partnerships. The dedicated Lower School faculty, known for their expertise and enthusiasm, guide students on a journey of discovery and academic excellence. 

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Providing pedagogical expertise and curricular oversight for grades one through five, in consultation with the Assistant Head for Academics
  • Hiring and supervising faculty, as well as mentoring faculty through a comprehensive evaluation and professional development plan
  • Leading the work of supporting the complex needs of students and families in the division, including parent communication and education and serving as the primary community builder in the Lower School.
  • Working closely with the assistant principal, the emotional support counselor, the director of learning services, and learning specialists as well as all faculty and staff in the division
  • Contributing to discussions of student life, financial and operational matters, and working collaboratively with the other school principals to ensure philosophical and programmatic alignment across the entire school.
  • Collaborating with the Beginning School Principal to facilitate joint division learning opportunities and meetings, with an eye for programmatic and curricular alignment in the early childhood years

Skills and Requirements

  • Educational Requirements: minimum Bachelor's degree
  • An experienced teacher, administrator, and community builder 
  • An interest in progressive education and collaborating with faculty members and administrators to effectively incorporate the latest research into our curriculum and instruction
  • A clear vision of their role as a leader and a strong understanding of what it means to support teachers in instructional practices
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, a sense of humor, cultural competence, and the desire and ability to work with students and families from diverse backgrounds 
  • Knowledge of best practices and a true love of working with children, particularly in grades one through five

Additional Details

This is a full-time, exempt position, reporting to the Assistant Head of Academics. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025.
