Job Description

Job Description and Duties

Are you looking to be a part of a dynamic team that manages and assesses California's inland fisheries resources? The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Fisheries Branch is seeking 2 motivated individuals to work as Scientific Aids on the Inland Fisheries Assessment and Monitoring (IFAM) Program's statewide field crew. IFAM's goal is to maintain and improve both warm and coldwater recreational sportfish populations within California’s lakes and reservoirs, and is based out of the West Sacramento Field Station.

This is a great opportunity to learn multiple survey techniques including boat and backpack electrofishing, collection of scales and genetic tissue, gill netting, collection of benthic macroinvertebrates, habitat and water quality evaluation, and angler surveys.

Main duties may include field-based fisheries research to assess the status of fish populations; coordinating the seasonal landlocked salmon egg collection (Kokanee and Chinook); data entry, management, and quality assurance; and aiding the fishing contest permit process. There will also be opportunity to gain experience in analyzing and summarizing data for publications and in the regulatory processes of Fisheries Branch. Candidates must possess a strong ability to collect and accurately record field data; follow protocols; operate and maintain survey equipment, vehicles, and vessels; exercise safety while in the field; and maintain a professional and personable demeanor.
