A dental hygienist is a skilled health care worker who typically works in a dental office or clinic. A dental hygienist is trained in the skills, concepts, and techniques of a dental care provider and has a state licensure. A hygienist has passed the required college level courses, and the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam. A hygienist ensures patient health by healing and cleaning patients’ gums and teeth, and gives education and instruction to promote proper dental hygiene.
Dental hygienists work under the supervision of a dentist and perform autonomous tasks focused on keeping the patients teeth and gums clean and healthy. Hygienists see patients on their own, and are able to direct their own tasks. A dental hygienist must build trust with patients of all ages.
