ABOUT US Verbum Dei Jesuit High School is a Catholic, Jesuit high school located in Watts with an enrollment of approximately 320 students. Part of the Cristo Rey Network (CRN), VDJHS offers young men from supportive families of limited resources a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, integrated with a professional work-study experience, and faith formation that prepares them to graduate from college as “men for others” who serve their communities and pursue a more just and humane world for all.
POSITION DESCRIPTION Verbum Dei Jesuit High School, a member of the Cristo Rey Network, is seeking a highly dedicated and passionate Cross-Country Coach to lead our student athletes in the pursuit of excellence both on and off the field. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, a commitment to fostering teamwork and sportsmanship, and desire to help student-athletes develop their athletic abilities and character.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES Coaching: - Plan and lead daily practices, focusing on skill development, conditioning, and strategy.
- Provide individualized coaching to student-athletes to help them improve their performance.
- Foster a positive and inclusive team culture that emphasizes sportsmanship, respect and teamwork.
- Attend and coach student-athletes during all scheduled meets, competitions, and tournaments.
- Analyze team performance and make adjustments to training and strategy as needed.
Player Development: - Identify and nurture the strengths of each student-athlete while helping them address areas for improvement.
- Instill discipline, dedication, and a strong work ethic in student-athletes both on and off the field.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to student-athletes to support their personal and academic growth.
- Collaborate with school staff to monitor the academic progress and well-being of student-athletes.
Program Administration: - Assist with the recruitment on campus and retention of student-athletes for the cross-country program.
- Maintain accurate records of team rosters, statistics, and performance data.
- Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents, school administration, and other stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with all school, league and governing body rules and regulations.
- Manage equipment, uniforms, and facilities used by cross-country program.
REQUIREMENTS Minimum: - Previous coaching experience, preferably at the High School level.
- Strong knowledge of cross-country training principles, techniques, and strategies.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to promoting the Jesuit values of academic excellence, service, and social justice.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by the schedule of meets and competitions.
- Valid CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
Desirable: Bachelor’s degree preferred.
